The origin of beads in Krobo is largely debated due to limited archaeological evidence. Today, the main manufacturing area of glass beads is in Ghana. The majority of beads in Ghana are made in by the Ashanti and Krobo people in the Krobo region. Beads still play a very prevalent role in modern Krobo culture. For example, beads are used in ceremonies of birth, coming of age, marriage, or death and are generously displayed in festivals and parades.
There are four main styles that the bead makers use. These styles include clear/translucent beads, powdered glass beads, painted glass beads, and seed beads. Each has their own unique attributes.
