The Health Benefits of Cooper

Why is it that many cultures place great importance on copper, and why is it still used today in the form of healing jewelry? The truth is, copper has been used for thousands of years as a folk remedy for many ailments we see today. It's not only an important element for living, but it's also known for its ability to heal wounds faster, sterilize water, treat lung disorders, and help headaches. How does Copper do This? Copper has several important properties that make it incredibly useful: Antimicrobial- Copper has what's known as an oligodynamic effect on bacteria. Basically, it kills microbes. Scientists aren't sure exactly how or why this happens, but they know that it definitely does work. In fact, this is important when hospitals are built, as they make the door knobs/handles out of brass (copper and zinc combined) to minimize bacteria transfer. Essential Mineral for Survival- Copper regulates the Thyroid, makes our bones strong, is the primary element in the formation of new cells and helps with iron absorption. Copper is Used in Ayurveda because of its important role in the body and its incredible healing benefits, Ayurveda (the ancient Indian health science) was quick to pick up on it and recommend its use. According to the ancient science, copper was excellent for balancing the doshas in the body. Their method of use included copper water vessels and brass jewelry is worn directly on the skin. For obvious reasons (as stated above), Ayurveda recommends that water be "purified" in a copper drinking vessel. This ensures that all the bacteria are killed and it's safe to drink, and its healing properties are absorbed internally. For jewelry (and especially bracelets), copper is often used to treat many of the most common ailments we have today by using a slower and longer lasting release through contact of the skin. Headaches, arthritis, joint pain, and zinc deficiency can be effectively treated for with the aid of copper or brass jewelry. In fact, many people swear by the use of copper bracelets, especially for treatment of arthritis.

While many of these statements are not backed by scientific evidence, I can personally attest to the benefits of wearing cooper jewelry for my arthritis in my fingers. Often, after I have made several beaded bracelets, I start to feel a stiffness in my upper joint of my middle finger of my left hand. If I put on my copper bracelet and leave it on for about 20 minutes, the pain is gone. Maybe its only a mild case of arthritis, but the cooper works for me (and my husband)!!
